Our Story
Before Sugar Shore, There was sugar here.
Waimānalo’s sugar story began in the late 1800s, when the Waimānalo Sugar Company turned much of the area into cane fields and built a mill that helped shape the local landscape for decades. Sugar remained an important part of the community until the plantation closed in 1947. Today, very little of that world remains, but it is still part of Waimānalo’s story.
Nearly eight decades later, our own sugar story began on a much smaller scale. Not in fields and mills, but in a small kitchen, with a fascination for traditional candy making and a habit of chasing unusual flavor ideas. Hawaiʻi is part of our story, but inspiration comes from all kinds of places, foods, drinks, and memories that have stayed with us.
What started as a hobby became something we kept thinking about, experimenting with, and getting better at one batch at a time. Eventually, it became Sugar Shore Candy Co.
There’s nothing wrong with basic. We just get bored easily.
Most of our flavors start with something familiar, then wander somewhere less expected. We test combinations, tweak them batch by batch, and keep pushing until the flavor feels interesting enough to earn a place on the menu.
The candy itself is made by hand in small batches, pulled, shaped, and cut the old-fashioned way. Some ideas click right away. Some need a few rounds of persuasion. A few get taken out back and never spoken of again.
